Investigators are still seeking information on a Sunday morning shooting that claimed the life of 21-year-old Demius K. Jackson.

Selma Chief of Police William T. Riley said the department has received leads and is still gathering information.

“We have received some leads, we are just trying to separate what is hearsay to what we can use to move forward in the investigation,” Riley said.

The murder occurred at 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning in the G.W.C. Homes neighborhood. When officers responded to the scene they found Jackson with a gunshot wound to the back, which had exited through his stomach. Jackson later died from his injuries.

Because of a rising number of violent crimes in the area, Riley said the department is in the process of placing a police precinct on the premises.

“We are moving forward with putting a precinct there, we just have to do some logistical work,” Riley said. “We are getting the building prepared and getting everything in place.”

Selma city councilman Corey Bowie, who represents Ward 8 where the shooting occurred, said increased police presence should serve two purposes.

“In any residence, safety is paramount,” Bowie said. “By placing a precinct there we feel like it will curb some of the violence and it will encourage the residents to interact with officers.”

The precinct, Bowie said, has been a collaborative effort between himself, the department, Selma Mayor George Evans and the city council.

Riley said the department has added surveillance cameras in the area, but the area where the shooting happened was not covered by the cameras. Riley said the department has now covered that blind spot.

“The area this crime occurred in did not have cameras,” he said. “We have since added cameras and plan to put up even more cameras.”
