A Sunday morning incident that ended with two residents of G.W.C. Homes suffering gunshot wounds has resulted in the arrest of a Selma juvenile.
The Selma Police Department took Jermaine Edwards, 17, of 1805 St. John St. in Selma, into custody and charged him with two counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and two counts of first-degree assault.
Edwards is being held under $250,000 bond for each count, which totals $1 million. Selma Chief of Police William T. Riley said the bond is especially high because there were children in the vehicle.
“The shooting occurred when a lady and her boyfriend were picking up their kids and this individual reportedly fired into the vehicle,” Riley said. “Both the woman and her boyfriend were hit in the leg.”
Though the injuries do not appear to be life threatening, Riley said this is still a very serious crime.
“The bonds are high because we consider him a danger to society,” Riley said. “A crime like this, especially when there are kids in the car, is unacceptable. Our goal is to do whatever we can to keep violent offenders like this off the street.”
Offenders, Riley said, must learn this behavior will not be tolerated.
“Really, we’d like to have no bond at all for a crime like this, but we understand they have to have bond,” Riley said. “We have got to protect everyone from individuals like this that have no regard for human life.”
District Attorney Michael Jackson said Edwards will appear before District Judge Bob Armstrong for arraignment later this week.
