Southside relied on big plays to extend its winning streak against Keith.
Ernie Campbell, Derick Smith and Roosevelt Towns III each scored two touchdowns as the Panthers prevailed 42-20 on Friday night at J.V. Caldwell Stadium in Orrville.
The Panthers (2-3) now lead the series 28-21-1.
Keith (3-3) jumped out to a 8-0 when Javon Richardson opened the game with a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Saderreion Reubin’s 2-point conversion run.
The Panthers tied the game at 8-all after one quarter on Town’s 4-yard TD run and two-point conversion sprint into the end zone.
Keith regained the lead at 14-8 on Aveon Young’s 3-yard TD run.
Southside took a 16-14 lead at halftime on Campbell’s 10-yard TD run and Towns’ 2-point conversion run. The Panthers never trailed again.
“I’ve been talking about mental fortitude, something bad will happen,” Panthers coach Charles Moody said. “The players kept playing. It’s a great win for us.”
The Bears had two chances to grab the lead at halftime, but failed on two opportunities inside the Panthers’ 10-yard-line.
“We left 14 points, potentially 16 points on the field in the first half,” Keith head coach Anthony Lumpkin said. “You can’t do that against a good team like Southside. We didn’t execute.”
The Panthers extended their lead 22-14 as Derick Smith returned the second half kickoff 90 yard for a TD.
The Bears climbed within 22-20 on Reubin’s 2-yard TD run, but failed to convert a game-tying two-point conversion. He finished with 163 yards on 32 carries.
The Panthers extended their lead to 28-20 after three quarters on Towns’ 2-yard TD run.
Southside closed the scoring on Smith’s 15-yard TD run and Campbell’s 20-yard TD run.
