After months of preparation, the Evans Special Benefit Golf Classic was held Wednesday.

Several people participated in the tournament from several different businesses.

The funds of the tournament goes to Cahaba Mental Health, Dallas County Schools and Selma City Schools. The tournament was made to help raise money and awareness for special needs kids and those who deal with mental health issues.

“I am just excited that they have the passion and the compassion to be here to support us,” Director Of Special Education at Dallas County Schools Bridgette Carter said. “ This is my first event that I have been here for so it is one thing when you hear about it. It is another to actually be here and see the faces. You see the eagerness and the excitement on their faces. They really do have the compassion and the heart to support our students.”

Members of the Selma city council at the event to help make the event a success as well as Mayor James Perkins Jr., who prayed over the golf scramble.

Former Selma Mayor George Evans has done this event since he was in office. Now that Evans longer holds the position, he still continues to do this event annually.

“We really appreciate his support and his commitment to continuing this event,” Selma City Schools Director Of Special Education Courtney Utsey said. “We rally behind him and all of us have a part in this together, but we really appreciate him spearheading this.”

The amount raised from the golf scramble will be announced at a later date. After all the money is counted, it will be distributed among Cahaba Mental Health, Dallas County Schools and Selma City Schools. The funds will be used in a variety of ways among the three groups. Dallas County will use the funds in different ways to help students succeed in the classroom. Whether that be a special type of seat and whatever it may be Dallas County will use the funds to make the student more comfortable in their classrooms.

SCS will use the funds to help get materials for an art show the special needs group puts on each year. They sell the art that students do in a fundraising event. The funds they receive from the golf scramble will be used to get supplies for the show.
