The Selma Charity League welcomed its new class Tuesday at its annual Spring Fling.

The Spring Fling, which was held at the home of Sis Yarbrough, is a way to welcome new members, introduce them to existing members and discuss some of the upcoming projects for the year.

Recruitment, outgoing president Sarah Youngblood said, is very important to the League’s efforts.

“We are all about community service and getting people involved,” she said. “The more people we can get on board, the more agencies we can serve. We’d like to be involved in as many causes as possible, so bringing in new members is a high priority.”

An example of the Charity League’s work for the past year is the adoption of angels from the Salvation Army Angel Tree. With less than a week to go until Christmas, members of the Charity League went to work with an aggressive radio campaign and partnered with the Salvation Army to make sure all of the children on the tree received gifts.

In the end, the team effort paid off.

Now, Youngblood said, the Charity League’s new members, which include Kendall Smith, Paige Smitherman, Claire Mosley, Stephanie Friday, Lori Jones, Jamie Horn, Erin Wilson, Susan Welch and Christina Siddens, will provide new ideas and increase the group’s availability for existing causes.

When new members come on board, Youngblood said, they are often given a choice of how they would like to contribute.

“A lot of them will choose where their heart leads them,” she said. “Some might choose Cahaba Mental Health Center and others choose Salvation Army. They talk to the other members and see where they will be able to help the most.”
