Seniors can now apply for vouchers

As gas prices continue to rise, the prices of fruits and vegetables are rising as well, which may be hard on the pocket books of some local senior citizens.
The Farmer’s Market Authority and the Alabama Cooperative Extension, offers seniors a solution when buying fresh fruits and vegetables. Eligible seniors, age 60 and over, can now apply for a free voucher worth $30 to use at the Selma-Dallas County Farmer’s Market set to begin June 4 at Bloch Park.
At the market, from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m., seniors can browse a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables grown by local farmers and purchase bushels or pieces in $5 increments.
Callie Nelson, Dallas County Extension coordinator, said this year’s vouchers will not be distributed face-to-face. As a result of the change, seniors will have to register online or mail an application in to be placed on a waiting list.
Vouchers are on a first come, first serve basis,” Nelson said. “It’s possible that if you participated in last year’s market you will receive an application in the mail.”
In addition with age requirements, Nelson said seniors must make a certain income to qualify for the voucher. With a one-person household, income cannot be more than $18,200; for a two-person home, not more than $24,500; and a three-person home income cannot exceed more than $30, 800. Both age and income requirements must be met.
Nelson said the vouchers help seniors to save money.
“By going to the farmer’s market, seniors don’t have to buy vegetables or produce at a grocery store for several weeks,” Nelson said.
After the opening, the market will open every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
For more information and to see if you may qualify for a voucher, go to www.fma.al.gov/eligibilityrequirements or call 242-2618.
Nelson said right now there is not a set date for when the vouchers will be released.
