Former Selma Saint Jai Miller was named the Pacific Coast League player of the week for his play during the week of April 18 through 24. Miller, who is the starting centerfielder for the Oakland A’s triple-A Sacramento River Cats, was announced as the player of the week by league officials Monday.
The 26-year-old Selma native hit four home runs through six games as the River Cats went 4-2. Miller totaled four multi-hit games for the week, while knocking in eight runs.
In the series against Reno, Miller tallied three doubles, four home runs, seven runs scored and eight RBI, finishing 10-for-17 (.588) against the Reno Aces.
Miller currently leads the PCL in slugging percentage (.826) and ranks ninth in batting average (.391). He leads the Cats in home runs (5) and RBI (16).
Miller is in his ninth professional season and his second stint with the River Cats.
To begin the 2010 season, he was claimed off waivers by Oakland and played 10 games with the River Cats before being claimed off waivers by the Royals less than a month later.
At the conclusion of the 2010 season, Miller elected free agency and signed a minor league contract with Oakland.
Miller was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the fourth round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft and signed in June 2003. Before signing with the Marlins, Miller had signed a letter of intent to play wide receiver and point guard at Stanford.
He made his Major League debut with the Marlins on June 22, 2008.
Miller signed his most recent contract, the minor league contract with Oakland, on Nov. 12.
