Gunnar Henderson’s MLB debut named top sports story of 2022

Gunnar Henderson’s Major League Baseball debut with the Baltimore Orioles is The Selma Times-Journal’s top sports story of 2022.
The former Morgan Academy shortstop homered in his first at-bat and was named Minor League Baseball player of the year by Baseball America.

2. Selma High safety DaKaari Nelson signed with Penn State, choosing the Nittany Lions over several SEC schools. Nelson was named The Selma Times-Journal football player of the year.
3. Southside High School boys and girls basketball teams reach the Class 3A State Final Four. The Panthers hadn’t reached the state semifinals in years, it was the Lady Panthers’ first-ever appearance.
4. Dallas County High School linebacker Daveon Jones signed a football scholarship to play at Navy.
5. Christopher Thomas of Southside becomes the first athlete to earn Selma Times-Journal football and basketball player of the honors in the same season.
6. Morgan Academy boys basketball team reaches AISA State Championship Game.

8. Wil Morgan was named Athletic Director at Selma High School. Morgan remains the Selma High girls’ basketball coach.
9. Morgan Academy reaches AISA State Semifinals in football. Senators head coach Danny Raines named Selma Times-Journal coach of the year. Linebacker Allen Michael Creech was named Defensive MVP.
10. Former Morgan Academy baseball standout Hunter Veach was named director of player development for the Texas A&M softball program in July.
