State Attorney General Steve Marshall visited Selma Wednesday to view the tornado damage that slammed the city last week.

Marshall held a press conference after surveying the city’s damage and visiting with Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. “It’s real humbling to see what’s going on in Selma,” Marshall said. “The city of Selma holds a special place in the State’s Attorney General Office.”

Marshall said the visit with Perkins went well, praising the Mayor’s leadership and dedication during the crisis.

Marshall praised Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum for getting the inmates transported to other parts of the state when the Dallas County Jail was severely damaged by the tornado. “For Sheriff Granthum to remove the inmates on short notice in a storm was a herculean task, I don’t think that’s ever been done in our state before,” Marshall said.

Granthum said the State Sheriff’s Association played a big role in the situation.

Marshall also thanked the Selma Police Department for keeping the city safe.

Marshall warned local residents not to fall for any scams from home builders, obtaining at least three bids and verifying their address and work record.

Dallas County Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn and Dallas County Commissioners Curtis Williams and Vivian Rogers attended the event.
