The African-American Greek organizations in Dallas County have lived up to their reputations by helping the community this month.

Since the tornado devastated Selma on January 12, we’ve seen the Dallas County Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta and Zeta Phi Beta Sororities, Alpha Phi Alpha, Omega Psi Phi, and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternities volunteer their time assisting tornado victims throughout the city.

These organizations have spent their time feeding tornado victims or providing clothes, tarp, plywood, hygiene bags, and water cleaning supplies to them.

The fraternities and sororities do community service throughout the year and we admire them for that. Businesses in Selma and Dallas County enjoy working with them.

The AKAs are known for their Reading is Fundamental program, which was started by the late Nancy Sewell, a former Selma City Councilwoman and AKA member.

The Omega Psi Phi fraternity has made giving away bicycles on Christmas an annual holiday tradition.

The Black Belt Alphas and Dallas County Zetas are noted for awarding scholarships yearly among their many charitable deeds.

Known collectively as the Divine Nine, the Greek organizations deserve a pat on the back. It’s an act that never gets old.
