Alabama State University delivered supplies to tornado victims in Selma on Friday at Selma University.

Under a bright sunlight and crisp morning, lines of cars filled the Selma University parking lot.

A group of ASU students and faculty members handed out supplies, including bottled water, toilet paper, soap for residents affected by the tornado that hit on January 12.

Trenholm State Community College also assisted ASU in the giveaway that benefited Queen City residents.

Alabama State University’s Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Malinda Swoope said it is important for the school to give back.

“At Alabama State, one of President Quinton T. Ross, Jr.’s top initiatives is giving back to others and  to the community that we live in and what is a more meaningful task at hand than lifting up the myriad residents of Selma whose homes and possessions were damaged and destroyed by a tornado,” Swoope said.

Selma University President Dr. Stanford Angion said what ASU is doing shows what Selma can be.

“When we have this type of unity, it shows what the City of Selma can do when we come together and what can be when we come together,” Angion said.

District 23 State Senator Robert Stewart and Selma City Councilwomen Christie Thomas and Lesia James were at the event.

James said its always amazing to serve the community.
