Owners of the old Kentucky Fried Chicken building are planning a 4,500 square foot strip mall set for completion later this year.

Demolition of the building began Thursday morning, and the new structure will go up over the site.

The space will hold three stores, and a potential business is already available to occupy one space.

KFC owner Mark Woodson said the project originally started out as a remodeling job, but turned into more once plans got underway.

“Six months ago, it was going to be a remodel of my old building,” said KFC owner Mark Woodson. “But I decided to just scrap it because it was going to cost just as much to remodel the old building as it was to build the new building. I decided to spend a little bit more and do some rental space
