Gone are the days when art enthusiasts gawked over expensive artwork made popular by such artists and photographers as Van Gogh, da Vinci, Annie Leibovitz or Michael Coyne, but children artists now reign supreme.

Dallas County High School seniors and Morgan Academy sixth through eighth graders submitted photography, 3-D, charcoal, watercolor and pastel works to showcase in the Selma Art Guild’s second annual Selma Art Guild Youth Show Sunday, to prove they are child prodigies in the making.

Sally Jordan, Selma Art Guild president, said the show is a great way to expose students to art.

“It’s important to get new individuals into art because a lot of art programs on the elementary level have been knocked out,” Jordan said. “High school art programs can prepare students who want to do artwork on the side or in college to take up graphic art or advertising. We want to continue the love of art.”

Cam Walker, eighth grade art teacher at Morgan, was excited to see some of her students win.

“It’s nice to compete in as many shows as they can,” Walker said.

The following students were winners in the following categories of photography, mixed media, 3-D, Works on paper (drawing, charcoal and pastel), opaque and transparent.

Photography-Lauren Criswell, first place (Morgan Academy); Michelle Spears, second and third place (Dallas County); Mixed media-Alex Davis, first place (Morgan Academy); Dillon Kinard, second place (Dallas County); Anne Smith Reeves, third place (Morgan Academy); 3-D-Taylor Smitherman, first place (Dallas County); Ashley Strickland, second place (Dallas County); Wade Mahan, third place (Morgan Academy); Works on paper-Will Sherrer, first place (Morgan Academy); May Moore, second place (Dallas County); Anne Smith Reeves, third place (Morgan Academy); Opaque-Whitney Denson, first place (Dallas County); Mary Logan Kelley, second place (Morgan Academy); Anne Smith Reeves, third place (Morgan Academy); Transparent (watercolor)-Shana Miley, first place (Dallas County); Emily Kaitlyn Edwards, second place (Morgan); Wade Mahan, third place (Morgan Academy).

Jordan wants as many students as possible to participate in next year’s show.
