The Battle of Selma re-enactment is more than just a celebration of the area’s deep Civil War history. It’s a gathering of friends.

Many people who travel to the event use re-enactments as an opportunity to reconnect with old acquaintances.

Mobile native Charles Coe, who has been participating in the Selma battle for 20 years, said it is one of his favorites.

“There are so many great aspects here,” he said. “The April 1865 Society does a great job of preparation and this area is actually a part of town that was part of the defenses. You can’t beat that.”

Newcomers were equally impressed. Terry Bailey, who traveled to Selma from Milton, Fla. for his first Battle of Selma, said he always makes new friends during re-enactments.

“This is our fifth one this year,” he said. “We usually travel to several each year because of the fellowship and brotherhood. That’s what this is really all about. Good friends getting together.”

People from all over the state gathered Friday night to hear the cannons fire off and enjoy the annual camp dance.

Spectator Diane McKristy, who traveled to Selma from Macon County, said she was hooked after her first battle several years ago.

“We love coming to  Selma and are glad to have the chance to visit again now that we have moved closer,” she said.

The celebration will continue Saturday with gates opening at 9 a.m. At 2 p.m. Union and Confederate forces will clash throughout the afternoon, re-enacting the first skirmish between the opposing armies.

Following the battle, the Grand Military Ball will be held at Studivant Hall. Period dress is required.
