The Selma Charity League held its  Ace of Hearts- Casino Night last Saturday at the at ArtsRevive.

Black Jack and Russian Roulette were among the games played under a 1990’s country music theme.

Proceeds from the event goes to the Selma-Dallas County Public Library and its Summer Program.

“Over the course of the summer the library’s programming keeps the minds of children focused on  learning even when school is out- through creative and experiential learning opportunities offered,” Selma Charity League President Shannon Watts said.

Heidi O’Quinn, SCL’s Signature Project Chair, said having Casino Night for huge for the organization since a tornado hit Selma on January 12.

“We chose the Selma Public Library to be the benefactor of this years event as a nod to one of the tenants that this service organization was founded on, literacy,”  O’Quinn said. “In the past women who have been a part of the league tutored and worked with youth in Selma to help them with reading and other educational initiatives.”

O’Quinn said over $10,000 was raised for the event.

“Casino night was a wonderful way to raise funds for a cause near and dear to our hearts, while having a little fun too,” O’Quinn said. “The Charity League is so grateful to our current and past  members and generous local business sponsors who made this event possible and who continue to support the endeavors of the league so we can serve individuals and families in Dallas County, Alabama”

The Selma Charity League began in 1931 and is a civic organization whose main interest is raising money for local charities and serving our community.

Throughout the year the league focuses on “spotlighting” various charities to help raise funds for their programming as well as provides monthly enrichment activities to the Nursing Home facilities located in Selma. The League also promotes women and education by mentoring high school youth in the Distinguished Young Women (DYW) scholarship program, as well as annually provides scholarship funds for a young woman participating in the Dallas County DYW program to further her education.

“I think the charity league raised a lot of money for the library’s summer program,” said Dallas County Commissioner Jan Justice, who attended the event. “It was a fun event for the community. The  Selma Charity League does a lot for people in need in Selma.”
