Now that Dallas County Relay for Life events are over, relay supporters and organizers can not only breathe a sigh of relief, but they also have an even bigger reason to smile.

Surpassing last year’s goal of $65,000, more than 46 teams made up of schools and local businesses, came together to raise nearly $110,000 for the cause, proving once more that teamwork really does pay off.

“This experience has been an eye-opener for everybody,” said Tanya Miles, chairperson for the relay. “We’ve set a record for this area — we’ve raised more than any other county. My heart has just been overjoyed by all of the support and I’m thankful from the bottom of my heart.”

With the survivors banquet and relay a success through media coverage, Miles said the entire process was good competition and kept participants’ spirits high.

“Team captains were relentless in the amount of money they wanted to raise,” Miles said. “Captains changed their goals from raising initially $65,000 from our first meeting. We raised $300 alone at the gate during relay, and kids were excited about raising money for the cause as well. People kept asking us and wanting to know how much money was raised.”

Miles recalled how many survivors thoroughly enjoyed themselves at the sponsored events.

“They had the times of their lives,” Miles said. “People from all teams just came together and had a great time.”

Veronica Brown, relay co-chairperson, said all the hard work was worth it.

“Teams were energized, motivated and involved,” Brown said.

“It was great to see how everyone participated. My sister Sherri would’ve been so proud; she’s dancing in heaven.”

Still keeping the goal of $100,000 for next year, Miles said the public must continue to be vigilant and strong in the fight to end cancer.

“We are fighting a demon with cancer, and it attacks our bodies everyday,” Miles said. “We have to remain knowledgeable and support those who are going through. If you’re down, we want you know that we’re here to lift you up.”

Brown said the relay needs more manpower and on site volunteers for next year’s events.
