Dallas County takes aim at title

Though the opponent is still unknown, one thing is certain for the Dallas County High School softball team. The journey to a state title begins Wednesday at home.
Southside and Jemison high schools still have two games to make up, Lady Hornet head coach Ed Miller said, which will be a determining factor in who shows up for Wednesday’s 2 p.m. area battle. No matter who that is, Miller said his team would be ready.
“We aren’t going to change anything,” he said. “We are going to have our usual lineup on the field. No matter who the opponent is we usually play the same lineup, so we aren’t going to stray from that.”
Dallas County did use a different lineup for Senior Day and fell to Montgomery Catholic in a 9-5 loss Friday. Miller said he hopes the team can bounce back emotionally.
“They were pretty upset and really down after that,” he said. “Hopefully they can put that loss behind them and take care of business.”
Miller added he is not concerned with the team’s attitude because they have shown so much resolve through the years. In four seasons, Miller said this group of seniors has only lost six games at home.
“I didn’t realize that until someone showed me the record the other day,” he said. “That really is outstanding.”
The Lady Hornets, who are now 28-5 on the season, are scheduled to travel to Catholic to try to get some revenge. However, Miller said rain could cancel those plans.
“There is about an 85 percent chance of rain, so we’re not sure if that’s going to happen,” he said. “We’ll practice Monday and get back to work and see what happens.”
The top two teams from the area tournament in Plantersville will advance to Troy for regional, Miller said. The top two from the regional tournament will advance to Montgomery for the state tournament.
