The Selma City Council and Mayor James Perkins Jr. agreed to terms on the City Budget Wednesday.

The city council unanimously passed a resolution during a Special Called Meeting. The lawsuit between Perkins and the city council has been paused.

The entire City Council was present: Council President Billy Young, council members Michael Johnson, Christie Thomas, Troy Harvill, Atkin Jemison, Clay Carmichael, Jannie Thomas, Lesia James.

Young said the city will continue to operate on the fiscal year 2021-22 budget.“That was a tough and a big accomplishment for us because we don’t have new additional revenues, so we had to be very creative in our budget,” Young said.

Under the agreement, the minimum wage for city workers will be raised immediately. Unskilled employees will be paid $12 an hour. Skilled employees will be paid $16 an hour.

Perkins must propose a city budget for fiscal year 2023-24 by July 1, and the city must pass a budget that is sustainable for the city by Aug. 1 or the lawsuit resumes.

Perkins called it a big accomplishment.
