Four senior graduates from Selma and Dallas County High Schools earned scholarships from  the Selma-Dallas County Public Library.

Taniya Dixon and Ka’nyla Moore of Selma High, Southside’s Taniya Dixon and Jeffrey Cochran Jr. and Delandra Wilson of Keith High each received $2,500 scholarships.

Dixon,  who will attend the University of Alabama, received the Edwin and Virginia Godbold Scholarship.

Cochran and Wilson each received the C.C. Long Scholarship.

Moore, who will attend Alabama, earned the Will Goodwyn scholarship.

The process began with 27 students through an application process in the school systems and ends with the library foundation Selection Committee, which consists of Ruth Talton John Crear, Carolyn Cox, Maggie Drake Peterson, Carol Long, Becky Youngblood, Denson Henry,  Gwen Carrington and Becky Nichols.

Administrators from all three schools praised their students receiving the scholarships.

“I’m so elated and so proud of Taniya,” Southside High Principal Cedric Brown said. “I’m real happy for Taniya and glad to be part of her educational career.”

Powell thanked the library and its committee for helping students build their bright futures.

“The library helps plant seeds for the children,” Powell said. “It takes a village and a community.”

Keith High Athletic Director and head football coach Anthony Lumpkin praised Cochran and Wilson, who wasn’t present at the ceremony, for their hard work and dedication.

Peterson, a former Judge, said the  choosing the four recipients over 27 candidates, was difficult, but the committee made the right choices.

“We’re proud that the library can provide scholarships,” Nichols said.
