Monday morning, prior to his trial, Thaddeus Aaron, chose to plead guilty to the murder of Helen Roper and assault second degree and received two life sentences from Circuit Judge Tommy Jones.
The case, which was prosecuted by assistant district attorneys Jimmy Thomas and Lloria James, ends an almost three-year process.
“I hope this helps bring closure to the Roper and Maul families,” District Attorney Michael Jackson said. “Thaddeus has ruined several families lives including his own by not thinking before he picked up a gun. We are going to keep cracking down on these gunslingers.”
According to police reports, on Oct.. 20, 2008 Marvin Maul reported to police that a black Honda Accord drove past his sister’s house at 1709 Voeglin Ave. According to Marvin’s report some unknown person shot from the vehicle and struck him in the left arm and his sister in the right leg.
Marvin was treated at Vaughan Regional Medical Center and released. His sister, Helen, was also treated at Vaughan before being transferred to Baptist South in Montgomery.
On Oct. 21 Helen died from her injuries.
Police received a tip from Crime Stoppers that the person driving the car was Joy Jones and the person that fired the shots was Aaron.
Jones admitted to driving the car and acknowledged Aaron was a passenger.
During his interview Aaron told police he was a passenger in the car driven by Jones and was in the area because his nephew Joshua Clark had been shot and he was searching for the responsible parties.
Aaron said he shot into the wrong house and provided the weapon used in the crime.
