Wings Director Glennis Porter was the guest speaker at the Selma Rotary Club on Monday.

Porter explained the meaning of  Wings, which stands for Walking in God’s Spirit. The Wings Respite Ministry, located at St.. Paul’s Episcopal Church,  opens from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Wings is part of Respite for All is a national movement of faith-based, volunteer-driven, intergenerational programs working together to build communities of well-being and connection for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

“It’s a wonderful program for our community,” Porter said. “I love volunteering at Wings.”

At St. Paul’s in April. Porter and Rev. Amy George, Rector and  program founder Daphne Johnston of Respite for All Foundation worked with 35 volunteers-in-training.

Johnston  founded the program 10 years ago at her Methodist church in Montgomery. She had experience working in assisted living and long-term care on the administrative side and saw a need for more support for family caregivers of people living with dementia.

Porter said that she also volunteers in Montgomery.
