Summer Programs are off and running at Selma City Schools.
One particular program looks to make a big impact in the lives of the students each day.
The Mentoring program was approved in June at the Selma City School Board Meeting and had its orientation on Tuesday at Selma High School.
Selma High Media Specialist Shawn Cole, Assistant Coordinator Shawanda York and former assistant girl’s basketball coach Darrell Davis will lead the class this summer with the goal to help the scholars in the program grow and learn more about themselves.
“The purpose of the Mentoring program is to help our youth by mentoring them and helping them find themselves in the right perspective to keep them on the right track so they won’t derail,” York said. “We want to help them get quality education by means of the Blue and Gold Mentoring Program.”
Davis discussed being aware of your surroundings and looking for careers when the time comes.
“The sky is the limit,” York said. “Blue is the sky and Gold is the path the scholars have taken to their next journey of being builders for our city and helping restore what has been broken and torn.”
The Blue and Gold Mentoring Program is for 9th-12th grade students at Selma High School and Saints Virtual Academy to improve not only their academic performances but also develop social skills, set and achieve goals and develop a positive outlook on life.
During the program, students will earn community service hours. If students want to attend they can come by Selma High to fill out a application. The class runs Monday through Thursday from 2 p.m.- 4:30 p.m.
