The “best and the brightest” girls from seven area high schools shined at this year’s “Girl of the Year” program held inside the Larry D. Striplin Performing Arts Center Thursday evening.
More than 16 girls were recognized for their outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements during Thursday’s event. Though three girls hailing from Dallas County High School, Ellwood Academy and Keith High placed as finalists, only one girl could take the title of the 2011 Girl of the Year: Rachael Sherrer.
Sherrer, a Morgan Academy senior and 2011 Dallas County Junior Miss winner, said she felt honored to be chosen.
“All of the nominees were just so outstanding — I was impressed,” Sherrer said. “I want to be an inspiration to others to work hard in school, do well academically and to develop good character.”
Judges determined the winner by the average accumulated points from grade point average, extracurricular activities, ACT score and the interview process.
Patti Campbell, coordinator of the event, said the competition gave her tremendous hope for the future.
“All of the girls were bright, beautiful and intelligent, and will represent Selma well,” Campbell said.
“As always, it was so close. Rachael is a wonderful person and is so well-liked by her peers.”
Sherrer’s mother, Neill, spoke highly of her daughter’s win.
“I’m so thrilled for her,” Neill said.
“There are a lot of children that look up to her and are encouraged to set high standards for themselves as she has. We’re blessed.”
Sherrer, who will attend the University of Alabama upon graduation, plans to major in ophthalmology.
