Vasser’s Mini-Mart and Winn-Dixie closed early Thursday after a noon protest at Vasser’s by several protestors, including activist Faya Toure.
The protest was in response to Chase Shipman’s, the owner of Vasser’s alleged involvement in a Montgomery Riverfront brawl last weekend.
Toure led a small group to protest shopping and eating at Vasser’s on behalf of an African-American man, who was one of two victims identified as part of the brawl.
Selma Police Chief Kenta Fulford said he was in the area on West Dallas Avenue, where Vasser’s and Winn-Dixie are located. Fulford said around 20 people protested and the group did not cause trouble.
Vasser’s closed its doors before 1 p.m. An hour later, Winn-Dixie, where some protestors had parked, closed for the day.
When Toure walked to Vasser’s at 3 p.m., the time she scheduled for her second protest, Vasser’s was closed and she eventually left. SPD and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency officers were on the scene.
