This week I saw my nephew for the first time.

He won’t be born until sometime in September.

You can clearly see the “Little Gummybear” as I like to call him right now as plainly as if he were out in the open and not relaxing in my sister-in-law’s stomach.

There are even a pictures where you can see the little guy rubbing his eyes.

This week I also talked to one of my good college friends face-to-face for the first time in about two years.

I should probably tell you that he lives in Japan.

It’s weeks like this that I have to sit back and just be baffled by the overwhelming power of our technology.

Sure, technology makes us a little more vulnerable to getting information stolen by people sitting by computers when companies don’t properly check their security -— here is looking at you Sony, but it also has such a tremendous power to do good.

Everyone has heard the story of Toomer’s for Tuscaloosa by now, but that is exactly what I mean by using the internet and technology to overcome hardship.

When something is needed, a tweet or Facebook message goes out from one person and, within mere minutes, thousands of people have already gotten the message and responded.

They aren’t the only ones, either.

If you aren’t  aware meteorologist James Spann has done such a great job of spreading the message of needs from across the state, not just the major city areas.

Spann, during the middle of the storms used his resources to keep people up to date with who could access their cellphone when power was out.

I know we tend to get used to what technology can bring us and how easy it makes our lives, but it still amazes me just how far we have come, even in the 24 years that I have been alive.
