The Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated concluded its Quarter One International Board of Directors Meeting last Saturday.

The event began with over 200 Zeta Phi Beta members attending a program at Selma University headed by sorority sister, Lynda Blackmon Lowery, the youngest person to take part in the Selma to Montgomery March and renowned author of “Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom,”

Lowery shared her experiences about being jailed nine times before turning 15 and described how she fought for African Americans’ right to vote with friends and neighbors alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“I didn’t go to jail for hurting anyone,” Lowery said.

Before the speech, Zeta Phi Beta donated $3,000 checks to each – Selma University and Selma City Schools.

Selma University President Dr. Stanford Angion, a member of the Zeta’s brotherhood, Phi Beta Sigma, said he appreciated the donation. He also praised the Dallas County Chapter of Zetas for their support.

Joe Peterson spoke on behalf of SCS and said they were grateful for the donation.

Dr. SoJuan Crenshaw, Alabama State Director of Zeta Phi Beta, also said it was a great event to see members travel from Atlanta to Charlotte, North Carolina to attend.

“It’s the first time for a lot of Zetas who have never been to Selma,” Crenshaw said.

After lunch, the Zeta Phi Beta members crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The group’s tour wrapped up in Montgomery with visits to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the Legacy Museum.

The Zeta Phi Beta Sorority members said they enjoyed the trip and honored late Congressman John Lewis, a member of Phi Beta Sigma, who was one of the key members in Bloody Sunday at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965.

“Being able to share in this experience and walk along the paths my ancestors marched is a phenomenal feeling like no other,” said Julliahann Washington, International Treasurer of Zeta Phi Beta.

“It was awesome to experience the reality of history,” added Linda W. Edwards, Parliamentarian, Zeta Phi Beta.

The Gamma Alpha Alpha Zeta chapter is based in Dallas County. Its members are Dr. Constance Hendricks, Anita Wood, Dr. Denisha Hendricks, Dr. Ellen Buckner, Dr. Shelicia Ford, Dr. Barbara Wilder, Dr. Irish Spencer, Greta Abernathy, Jeanette Cadell, Karen Bailey, Lynda Lowery and Shelly McGee.
