A United Way building damaged by the January 12 tornado was recently repaired and is now open.

United Way Executive Director Jeff Cothran said that the organization is working with United Methodist Church Committee on Relief (UMCOR), helping them fund cases.

“These cases have been for as little as $1,000 for some furniture,” Cothran said. “All the way to $10,000 for major home repairs and new roofs, and new home construction plans are in the works.”

Cothran said the United Way Board approved using the office building to house volunteers from affiliated groups.

Cothran said United Way raised over $400,000 for tornado relief, in conjunction with efforts from the Long-Term Recovery Group and up to 10 people can stay at one time. Cothran said that St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Rector Amy George provided the idea.

“The efforts of so many of our neighbors have been inspiring to not only me but many others to continue the work to alleviate the needs of those who are still suffering from the aftermath of the storm,” Cothran said.
