The Michael D. Johnson Foundation is preparing to host their annual veteran’s recognition breakfast on Nov. 9, from 8:30-10 a.m., at the Arts Revive Center. This event, open to all veterans and active-duty service members, provides a moment to express gratitude and appreciation for the sacrifices made by these brave individuals.

Event organizer, Thomasine Johnson, has been leading this cause for the last decade. 

“We’ve been doing something for the veterans every year for at least the last ten years,” Johnson said. 

These breakfasts have grown over time, she explained, sometimes serving up to 125 service members, all united for a common cause – honoring the men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting the nation. 

“It’s important to recognize our veterans,” Johnson said. “They deserve to be honored [for their willingness] to make a commitment to serve, to protect our country so that we can have the freedom to do as we please to say, “If I have to give my life, then I will.’” 

This year’s event holds special significance as it will be dedicated to the memory of Samuel Edward Johnson, Thomasine Johnson’s husband and a Vietnam veteran who was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery. Tragically, Samuel passed away on Oct. 22. 

The breakfast aligns with the mission of the Michael D Johnson Memorial Foundation, established in honor of Samuel’s son, Michael D. Johnson. The foundation website states that their mission statement “is to preserve the life and legacy of the late Michael D Johnson through awarding college scholarships to local high school graduates; as well as awarding and recognizing various local organizations that partner with the foundation by helping them fulfill their mission to the community through various interactions that engage youth and/ or community activities.”

All military veterans or active-duty service members are invited to join in for breakfast on Nov. 9 at Arts Revive Center, at 3 Church Street in Selma, from 8:30-10 a.m.
