Five athletes receive Quarterback Club scholarships

Five Dallas County football seniors received scholarships awarded by the Selma Quarterback Club.
Keith’s trio of Aveon Young, Jeffrey Gibson Jr., Joseph Lumpkin joined Marchun Moten-Weeden of Dallas County and Milton Hand of Morgan Academy each receiving $4,000 scholarships.
All five seniors expressed appreciation and gratitude as the latest crop of seniors to get honored by the Selma QB Club.
“I can use the scholarship money to put toward my career as a electrician,” said Young, who plans to attend Shelton State Community College next year.
Hand, who plans to attend the University of Alabama or University of West Alabama, said he is grateful being the latest Morgan Academy player to get honored by the Selma QB Club.
“I’m honored to be getting a scholarship from the Quarterback Club,” said Hand, who plans to major in Computer Science. “We only won a game this season, but I enjoyed being a leader to our younger players.”
Gibson said the scholarship money will go toward a Sports Medicine career at West Alabama and honor his late father, Jeffrey Gibson Sr.
“The scholarship means a lot and it will help my mother with financing,” Gibson said.
Lumpkin said the scholarship will help attend Alabama A&M University and majoring n Agriculture.
“The scholarship money gives me more of a chance to be a farmer,” Lumpkin said.
Here are the scholarships each received:
-Gibson – W. Forrest Hatfield Scholarship.
-Moten-Weeden – J. Harmon Carter Scholarship.
-Lumpkin – “Big” Fred Davis II Scholarship.
-Young – Larry D. Striplin Jr Scholarship.
-Milton – Catesby ap C. Jones Scholarship.
University of Alabama Athletic Director Greg Byrne was the keynote speaker and addressed the student-athletes, praising the seniors for their scholarship opportunity.
“Don’t lose your work ethic, you’ll have a career path down the line,” Byrne said. “I was a great athlete in my own mind. I wasn’t good enough to play at either Alabama or Auburn.”
