On Friday, Dec. 22, the Black Belt Benefit Group (BBG) is set to host Selma’s annual Art Jam at a fresh venue — AC Reeves Five and Dime, situated at 201 Broad Street. The event’s usual host, the Walton Theater, is undergoing construction, prompting this change of venue.

Clay Carmichael, a BBG member, expressed the group’s fondness for the Walton Theater but conveyed their excitement about the new setting. 

“We’re having to change venues due to the Walton Theater being under construction,” Carmichael said. “It’s close to finished but we’re at a point where we have to make a move, so we’re moving across the street to the Five and Dime.”

Carmichael highlighted the appeal of AC Reeve’s, describing it as a fantastic community space with regular art displays. He noted that the natural stage built into the window displays and the addition of a new kitchen will ensure a seamless fit for the event.

On display at the venue will be art from local artists including Bradford Brackin, Jo Taylor, Madison Faile, Phalecia Young as well as live painting with Anne Smith Reeves. 

“We’re just excited for this annual event,” Carmichael said, emphasizing the goal of celebrating local art, Alabama musicians and exceptional food.

The evening’s entertainment will feature the musical group, Willie C. Capps, comprising Will Kimbrough, Corky Hughes and Grayson Capps, with a special guest appearance by Katrina Miller on the fiddle. Kicking off the night is Mobile’s Mistress of Soul, Symone French, in a duo performance at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. and admission is $35, with delicious offerings from the Funky Forte food truck.

For those seeking an enhanced experience, VIP tickets, priced at $75 are still available. VIP perks include early admission at 5 p.m., a meal, happy hour and an exclusive musical performance by Paul Gardner.
