Two former Selma High School football players will close the year with their college teams playing in Bowl games on Saturday.
Offensive guard Jeremiah Wright and safety DaKaari Nelson play for Auburn and Penn State, respectively. Auburn faces Maryland in the Music City Bowl in Nashville at 1 p.m. on ABC. Penn State meets Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta at 11 a.m. on ESPN.
Wright is a fourth-year junior currently a backup right guard, but the 2020 Selma High graduate sees a lot of playing time. Wright also plays on the Tigers’ special teams.
Nelson is being redshirted for the Nittany Lions, who love his potential as a future defender. The 2023 graduate of Selma High told Penn State media on Nov. 1 what the knowledge he gained as a true freshman.
“Stepping on campus, I learned about the speed game where everyone’s bigger and faster,” Nelson said.
“That’s making me get faster. The most important thing in getting used to the speed is adapting to the playbook and taking care of your body.”
Nelson was The Selma Times-Journal football player of the year in 2022.
Wright earned All Dallas County honors in 2019.
