The City of Selma will look back at the one-year anniversary of the tornado that hit Selma on Saturday at Arts Revive. The event will be held from 10 a.m. until noon.
Gale M. Bedgood of the Arts Revive spoke at the Selma City Council Work Session on Jan. 4, requesting that Church Street and Water Avenue be closed for the two-hour event. City Council President Billy Young said that closing the area would not be an issue and looking back at the tornado is important for Selma.
Residents will receive free preparedness items, build a budget-friendly safety kit and hear from local meteorologists and public safety officials. WAKA Action News 8 and WSFA 12, both of Montgomery will have their weather vehicles at the event.
Selma City Schools released a statement, encouraging families to attend.
“Families need to come out and learn how to prepare when severe weather strikes.” school representatives said in a statement.
Throughout last year, Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. said he appreciated the city getting support from President Joe Biden, Gov. Kay Ivey, Congresswoman Terri Sewell, the Selma City Council, Senators Katie Britt, Tommy Tuberville, State Senator Robert Stewart, and Rep. Prince Chestnut.
The City of Selma, Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce, the Coffee Shoppe, Arts Revive, Sea Grant, Vaughan Regional Medical Center, Dallas County Emergency Management Agency, Midland, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Weather Service-Birmingham and NOAA Weather radio are sponsoring the event.
At the event, Arts Revive will unveil a mosaic dedicated to residents impacted by the tornado.
