University of Alabama Law Professor Bryan Fair was the guest speaker at the  Selma Chapter of The Links, Incorporated’s 31st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Unity Breakfast on Monday at Selma University.

Fair said it was an honor to speak at an event honored on MLK Day, especially in a city like Selma.

“Selma is a place so central to the Civil Rights movement,” Fair said. “I thank Links President Dr. Evelyn Evans and Ronita Wade both for inviting me. I appreciated the invitation to an organization like the Links, who are often a lifeline to communities.”

Fair, who earned a law degree from UCLA, said he’s the proud son and father of successful men.  He has taught law for 37 years, mostly at Alabama.

“I love being a law professor and changing the University of Alabama Law School for the better,” Fair said. 

As Fair closed his speech, he said the world needs leaders like U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell for civil rights equality.

Fourth Judicial District Attorney Robert L. Turner delivered the invocation, praying for a safe and healthy Selma and Dallas County.

Greetings were delivered by Dallas County Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn and Selma City Council President Billy Young. Danielle Wooten and Mark Neely spoke on behalf of Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. and State Senator Robert Stewart, respectively.

Nunn said Selma and Dallas County were recovering from the tornado a year ago and sees progress.

“We should be thankful because we all could have been dead,” Nunn said.

Young challenged the people who attended the Links breakfast to unite and become a family.
