On Wednesday, Wallace Community College Selma – Best Buy Teen Tech Center welcomed students for the new semester. After Martin Luther King weekend celebrations and inclement weather shutdowns, students were set for the new school year at the Teen Tech Center, “Where technology meets imagination!”

Best Buy Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1994, supports brighter futures for teens from disinvested communities.

Asaad Abdullah, a digital media marketer from Atlanta, partners with the non-profit everyoneon.org in conjunction with Best Buy Foundation for this spring’s program at WCCS. Abdullah, the program’s digital skills instructor, aims to transition students from online content consumers to creators.

The Teen Tech Center, the only site in Alabama and one of a few in the southeast region, is located on the WCCS campus. Best Buy C2C Facilitator Letti Hasberry has worked at the center since March as the front person for the college-to-career (C2C) programs.

“This year’s program and partnership with everyoneon.org and Best Buy started in October and will end in May,” Hasberry said.

The WCCS C2C program specializes in career readiness at the community college level.

“It is my hope that students will acquire the skills needed to transition from high school to college and then from college into the workforce,” explained Hasberry. The Best Buy Teen Tech website celebrates, “Best Buy Teen Tech Centers provide tech access, training, and mentorship to young people in disinvested communities.” With a projection to open 100 locations by 2025, the WCCS site is on a shortlist of communities fortunate to be selected as a targeted demographic.

“I feel fortunate to be in such an awesome position, helping Selma teens develop the tech skills of the future,” expressed Abdullah. “Over the past five years, Atlanta has become a major technology hub, and I am confident these students will be as tech-savvy as any other Best Buy Teen Tech Center members, including our location in Atlanta.”
