Cornelius H. Johnson Sr. spent 50 years in the U.S. Post Office Selma branch, performing a variety of jobs. He recently announced his retirement and a party was held for Johnson at the Selma-Dallas County Public Library on Jan. 18.  The event was sponsored by the Coffee Shoppe and the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority of Dallas County.

“I worked 50 years, 10 months and three days at the post office,” Johnson said. “I got up at 5:30 a.m. every day for work and my working hours were 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.”

The jobs Johnson performed at the post office included delivering the mail, processing mail to get delivered and as a sales associate. 

Johnson admitted that he’s slowly adjusting to no longer doing the daily grind of working at the post office.

“We’re still trying to figure our way, but we’re getting there,” Johnson said. 

Johnson and his wife of 48 years, Rosalyn Johnson, have three children: Cornelius Johnson III, Cornelia and Valerie. 

Johnson received proclamations and resolutions from Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr., Dallas County Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn, State Senator Robert Stewart and US. Rep. Terri Sewell. He also received the Service Award and Certificate of Retirement from the post office. 

Nunn said he appreciated Johnson’s hard work and dedication.
