An Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) project to replace the bridge over Blue Gurth Swamp on Alabama Highway 14 (SR – 14) in Dallas County begins Monday, Feb. 12.
Brantley Kirk, who heads ALDOT’s Southeast Region, said the process will begin with sign and traffic control installation, weather permitting.
Dallas County Emergency Management Agency Director Toya Crusoe shared Brantley’s advisory on social media.
The new bridge will be built in the same location of the current structure. Starting Feb. 14, a detour will be in place while the current structure is removed, and the new one will be built.
The official signed detour will have travelers utilizing SR-41 and SR-140.
The $3.4 million project was awarded to Murphee Bridge Corporation out of Troy, who had the lowest bid that met the project requirements. The project will be completed Spring 2025.
Dallas County resident Cindy Anderson posted on social media urging residents to begin taking precautions.
“Everyone should leave at least an hour early because Highway 140 will be crowded.” Anderson said. “Please watch for school buses and children.”
