Treasure hunter and collector John Phillips was the guest speaker March 14 at the Selma Dallas County Public Library.
Phillips, also a well-known videographer, showcased old coins and other historical artifacts to the audience. Phillips started finding many historical objects: old coins, store tokens, buttons and eating utensils from the 1800s.
“I’ve told 1,300 tales at 80 different libraries and 80 different churches,” Phillips said. “It’s the pursuit of history that is the thrill.”
Phillips said Selma holds a special place in his life. He has visited the Queen City a few times.
“I like Selma,” Phillips said. “I’ve brought bus tours to Selma where we crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge and visited Sturdivant Hall. Selma’s history impresses me.”
Phillips is well-educated. He graduated from the University of Alabama with a broadcast degree, a master’s degree in educational media at UAB and graduate series degree at San Diego State.
A professional videographer since 1983, Phillips’ brother, Dr. Doug Phillips, is also a noted Alabama naturalist who produces the Alabama Public Television series “Discovering Alabama.”
