Former Selma High School track and cross country coach Houston Young spoke at the Selma City Council meeting on March 26.
Young spoke on the Citizen’s Concerns portion of the council meeting, discussing the condition of Memorial Stadium, especially the track and field. Young said the facility needed an upgrade, which council officials estimated will cost over $3 million.
“The City of Selma deserves a better stadium,” Young said. “Our youth deserves better.”
A member of the University of West Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Young said Selma has a history of outstanding track performers.
“Selma has a lot of athletes who run track,” Young said.
Young arrived at Selma High School in 1971 and began the cross-country program, compiling a 47-6 record. He also was the track coach and assistant football coach, taught drivers’ education and physical education until leaving in 1979.
A 1963 graduate of Uniontown High School, Young became a state meet director for all AHSAA track and field events and has worked every one since 1968.
Councilman Michael Johnson said Selma used to host state track meets but did not have enough hotel rooms.
Young later worked as an administrator at Wallace Community College-Selma until he retired in 2001.
