TROY — Dallas County High School claimed the AHSAA 4A South Central Super Regional softball championship Saturday with a 2-1 defeat of Dadeville High School.

Senior Cassie Daniels, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable player, pitched the title game.

“We played well,” Dallas County head coach Ed Miller said. “Cassie (Daniels) gave up just the three hits and the one run they scored was on an error.”

The Lady Hornets had no trouble getting runners on base during the game, but did have trouble advancing runners.

“We did a great job of getting the lead off on all night,” Miller said. “But we had three separate times where we struggled bunting to move them over. I think the girls were just trying to bunt for a hit, not just sacrifice.”

The Lady Hornets were perfect in the super regional with two wins on Friday including a 3-1 win over Oak Grove and Saturday morning’s 6-0 win over Holtville.

The Oak Grove game, which did not take place until 11 p.m. Friday, due to weather, went into extra innings tied 1-1.

After holding Oak Grove scoreless in the top half of the eighth inning, senior Daniels stepped to the plate and hit a two-run home run to end the game.

During Saturday’s early game, the big blow for the Lady Hornets came off the bat of Ilica Stewart, who hit a grand slam with Dallas County already up 2-0.

The Lady Hornets must now prepare to play in the AHSAA State Tournament held in Lagoon Park beginning Thursday.

“We are going to get right back to work,” Miller said. “We have three days to work on hitting, bunting and bunt coverage. (Dadeville) figured out quick they couldn’t hit (Daniels) and they tried to bunt every time. I think we are going to see the same thing this week.”
