The Selma City Council approved creating an agreement with Dallas County officials on litter control.
Council members present at Tuesday’s meeting unanimously approved the measure with President Billy Young, council members Clay Carmichael, Troy Harvill, Christie Thomas, Lesia James, Atkin Jemison and Jannie Thomas all voting in favor.
Carmichael, the public works committee chairman, said litter control is important in the area.
“This is something we have to do to clean the city up,” Carmichael said. “We need to figure it out by budget hearings and negotiate with Dallas County.”
Carmichael also discussed creating a non-exclusive contract with Martin Environmental and negotiating pricing down over charges. Carmichael said it’s a matter of putting documents together for review and bringing them to the city council for a vote.
Local residents have complained on social media about their garbage pickup being a few days late by Martin Environmental.
Martin Environmental posted on social media last month about its service inconsistencies, but admitted that 25% of its customers do not pay their bill. Also, officials added that they wait for months before receiving payment.
