Eight students awarded John Taylor scholarships

Eight students were honored at the 10th annual John D. Taylor Scholarship banquet and the 75th Anniversary Celebration of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s Delta Phi Lambda Chapter on July 20 at the George P. Evans Building.
Students in the Class of 2024 receiving scholarships were: Tommy Tisdale III (Keith), Henry Murphy III (Selma), Victor Rutledge (Selma), Vondories Turner (Selma), Charles Johnson III (Stanhope Elmore), Nia Turner (Francis Marion), George Fails (Dallas County) and LeMarcus Agee (Wilcox Central).
Johnson was awarded the Randall Miller Scholarship. Rutledge was awarded the Dr. Charles Lett, Sr. Scholarship. Turner was awarded the Mayor George P. Evans Scholarship.
The program was sponsored by the Delta Pi Lambda Foundation. The Banquet has not been held since 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Honorees were: Betty Miller, Jackie Smith, and the late former Mayor George P. Evans .
“The Delta Pi Lambda Educational Foundation is pleased to bring back this annual tradition to the City of Selma,” Black Belt Alpha member Billy Young said. “We congratulate our Honorees and their families. We also salute our scholarship recipients and wish them success in higher education.
Jeannie Evans, widow of George Evans, daughter of John D. Taylor, Rosa Taylor and State State Sen. Robert Stewart attended the event.
