Jack Johnson ran for 187 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns as Morgan Academy defeated Southern Academy in the season opener Friday night.
The win was also the first win of the Jacob Webb tenure at Morgan. The Senators (1-0) will travel to Wilcox Academy next week.
Both of Johnson’s scores came after halftime when the Senators faced a 22-16 deficit. His first score tied the game at 22-22 on a 57-yard run. The second came at the 7:45 mark of the fourth quarter to give the Senators the lead for good.
Morgan jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a 15-yard pass followed by a 5-yard run by quarterback Caden Tellier, Trevor White made the PATs.
Southern scored on a touchdown before half and then tied the game early in the third quarter.
Thomas Clay Atchison tackled Souther in the end zone for a safety to give Morgan a 16-14 lead.
A scary moment occurred in the third quarter when Tellier went down with an injury. The game was delayed while they treated him and then was taken to the hospital by ambulance from the field. His condition wasn’t immediately known as of press time.
Southern answered with another touchdown to go up by six after the two-point conversion.
Johnson sealed the win for the Senators with his second half touchdowns.
