Morgan Academy played its first road game of the season on Friday night. The Senators traveled to Greenville to take on the third ranked Fort Dale Academy Eagles in a big region game.
It was a heartbreaker for the Senators, as Morgan lost to Fort Dale 21-20 in overtime in a game that was marked by key turnovers, momentum swings and clutch plays.
Morgan Academy fell behind 7-0 on Fort Dale’s first possession. Dain Winters raced 34 yards to put the Eagles on the board at the 10:12 mark of the first quarter.
Morgan then gave up a six-yard touchdown run to Fort Dale quarterback Blake Slagley with 11:09 to go in the second quarter to make the score 14-0 in favor of the Eagles.
The Senators recovered a crucial fumble in Fort Dale territory just before halftime and cashed in with 33 seconds to go in the second quarter. Backup quarterback Baron Fraser scored on a five-yard run to make the score 14-7. Fort Dale at intermission Morgan Academy’s defense held Fort Dale scoreless in the second half of regulation.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Fraser scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper to tie the game at 14. The Senators recovered another Fort Dale fumble at the Morgan three-yard line to keep the second half shutout intact.
Blake Slagly scored on a six yard quarterback counter and the extra point made it 21-14. Fort Dale Morgan scored on fourth down from the 1ft line on its possession to make the score 21-20.
The Senators went for the win. The two-point conversion try was pushed back to the eight yard line after an illegal procedure penalty. The try failed when Baron Frazier’s rollout pass fell incomplete and the jubilant Eagles charged the field. Frazier ended the night 6 of 10 passing for 63 yards and he rushed for 31 yards on 11 carries, including three touchdowns.
With the overtime loss, Morgan falls to 1-2 on the season and 0-2 in AISA Class AAA Region 2 action. Meanwhile, the Eagles improved to 4-1 on the year and 3-0 in region play. Morgan Academy will have an even tougher task next week. The Senators will step away from region play when they venture to when they venture to Lafayette to face the number one ranked Rebels of Chambers Academy.
