Black Belt Community Foundation’s 2024 Legacy Dinner

The Black Belt Community Foundation will have its 2024 Black Belt Legacy Dinner as it celebrates the 20th anniversary of its founding, taking place on Thursday, Oct. 3, at the Harbert Center in Birmingham. The evening will commence with a 6 p.m. reception celebrating Black Belt culture and arts, followed by dinner and an award presentation honoring Chris Womack, Chairman, President, and CEO of Southern Company. Tickets start at $100 and are available on EventBrite.

Yellowhammer Theatre’s It’s All Relative

Yellowhammer Theatre Group will present a 10-minute play festival titled “It’s All Relative” Friday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. at ArtsRevive. The event will feature short plays and readings about family. Join us for a heartwarming night for stories that will make you laugh, cry and everything in between. From sibling rivalries to parent-child dynamics, these short plays capture the essence of family relationships. Don’t miss this special event celebrating the ties that bind us all together. Some of the titles include “Remembered” by John Mabey, “Secret Family Recipes” by Emily McClain, “Good Grief” by Barbara McDonald and “Given: A Way” by Michael Towers. Community Prayer Day

The S.T.O.M.P. Selma Citywide Day of Prayer will be Saturday, Oct. 5, at Phoenix Park, 1207 Water Avenue, Selma, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The theme is Unity in the Community. Guest speakers are Bishop Beau Barton of Courts of Praise Church in Elmore, Activist Harry Traveling Shoes Preacher Turner of Birmingham and Rick Robinson of Score International, First Baptist Tuscaloosa. Selma Art Guild featured artist

​​The Selma Art Guild’s featured artist of the month for October is Sally Jordan, former Selma resident and SAG President, whose works will be on sale as a fundraiser to benefit the Selma Art Guild at a Halloween-themed reception held in conjunction with 1st Saturday Selma on Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and on Sunday Oct. 6 from 2-4 p.m. The show will remain up and Jordan’s art for sale through the month of October. Visitors will trick or treat around the gallery collecting candy and viewing the art. And all of Jordan’s works at the SAG Gallery, located at 508 Selma Ave. will be affordably priced for quick sale from $10 to $50 each.

Old Cahawba Walking Tours

Old Cahawba’s Cemetery Walking Tour will be on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10-11 a.m. The decaying ruins of Old Cahawba’s historic cemeteries provide a deeper understanding of the richly layered history surrounding the events that occurred at the site of Alabama’s first capital. This tour will explore the personal sagas of many of those who lived here before joining its community of perpetual residents. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased by calling the visitor center at 334-872-8058 or onsite in the gift shop. We accept all major credit cards.

BBQ on the Green

The annual BBQ on the Green fundraiser for Sturdivant Hall will be Thursday, Oct. 10, from 7-9 p.m. Tickets are $30 a ticket for pickup or enjoy eating on the Green. Tickets are available at Sturdivant Hall. Contact 334-875-2656 for more information.

Pastoral Appreciation

First Baptist Church at 211 County Road 121 in Orrville will host pastoral appreciation for Pastor Curtis and First Lady Margaret Jackson on Oct. 6 at 1:30 p.m with guest speaker Pastor Octavius Bonner from Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Tyler.

Haunted History Tours

Old Cahawba’s Haunted History Tours will be on Saturday, Oct. 19 and 26. On this rare nighttime 90-minute tour, you will be shuttled to this ghost town’s most haunted locations. HIstorical accounts of sightings and personal experiences will be shared by your hosts, setting the stage for Alabama Paranormal Research to demonstrate the art of ghost hunting. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance by calling the visitor center at 334-872-8058 or onsite in the gift shop. We accept all major credit cards.

New Bethel MB to celebrate 128th anniversary

New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Orrville will host its 128th anniversary and homecoming Sunday, Oct. 20 at 1:30 p.m. with guest speaker, pastor Charles Burns and sister Valerie Ellis.

Southern Alabama Veterans Ball

The 2024 Southern Alabama Veterans Ball is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. at the Kiwanic Center, 2096 Kiwanis Drive in Andalusia. Paid tickets are required.  A Veterans Holiday Fair will take place Friday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The event is open to the public.   • Al-Anon, a support group for families and friends of alcoholics, meets every Monday at noon in Common Ground at Gamble House, across from St. Paul’s Episcopal.
  • The Selma Outreach Team Fellowship Prayer Ministry will have a prayer meeting on the first Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. For more information, call (334) 412-6673. 
  • Edmundite Missions holds Bible study every Monday from 10 – 11 a.m. in the classroom of the Bullock Community and Recreation Center. Call (334) 553-2736 for more information.
  • Free Zumba and meditation classes are held weekly at the Bullock Center on 1428 Broad Street. Zumba is Monday and Thursday and meditation is Tuesday and Wednesday. Both are held at 5:30 p.m.
  • The Selma and Dallas County Public Library offers Book Bunch every Thursday from 10-11 a.m. in the Kathryn Windham Conference Room. All are welcome.
  • The AUM Foundation is seeking Selma women to serve as mentors for the 2024-2025 school year. Call (334) 407-9429 for more information.
  • Edmundite Missions is seeking volunteers to assist in operating the new Dr. Michael and Catherine Bullock Community and Recreation Center. Tutors, coaches, greeters, room monitors, active adult teachers, team organizers and administrative support volunteers are needed.   • The Dallas County School System is actively seeking to identify and enroll all students who are living in a homeless situation that reside within Dallas County School’s jurisdiction through the McKinney-Vento Assistance Act.   • The American Red Cross is looking for volunteers. Critical needs currently are for disaster action team volunteers and blood drive volunteers. There are over 100 volunteer needs including disaster action team member, shelter worker, health services volunteer, disaster action team auxiliary member, fleet and facilities operation positions, and blood donor ambassadors.   • Alabama State Bar volunteer lawyers program will have its Selma monthly civil legal advice clinic on the first Wednesday of each month from 1-3 p.m. at the Dr. Michael and Catherine Bullock Community and Recreational Center, 1428 Broad Street. Local lawyers will provide free legal advice to those who cannot afford legal assistance on topics including divorce, visitation, debt, tenant issues, probate matters and Bankruptcy.
