Music At the Mill

Join us for a day of outdoor fun with family and friends at Historic Kenan’s Mill on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring chairs or blanket. Enjoy the music and arts vendors. Explore the grounds. Walk on the swinging bridge. Tour the Mill and farm cottage, and visit the newly repointed charcoal kiln. Musicians include: Phillip Morgan Band, Jack Bearden, Central Alabama Strummers and Willie Harris. Admission is $5 per person. Children 12 and under are admitted free.

Safford Trading Fall Festival

Safford Trading Fall Festival will be on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 22445 Al-22 Safford.

Community Health Fair and Giveaway

PC Band concert

PC Band will perform on stage at Riverfront Amphitheater as part of the Levitt Amp Selma Music Series on Saturday, Oct 12. Gates open at 7 p.m., and showtime is at 8 p.m. Free entry. Vendors and food trucks will be there. Bring your lawn chairs, tents, and coolers (clear bags only).

Alzheimer’s Support

The Selma/Dallas county Alzheimer’s support group will meet at the public library at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15. All caregivers and other interested persons are encouraged to attend.

Big Buck Showdown

Scott Communications is teaming up with area businesses all over Central Alabama to deliver the Big Buck Showdown. Contest runs Oct. 15 through Feb. 10, 2025.

Get Fit Selma! HealthFest coming

The 11th annual Get Fit Selma! HealthFest will be Saturday, Oct. 19, between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m.  There will be a Kidz Color Run, School Carnival, and “Street Olympics.” Information and registration for the run & walk are available online at https://www.mglcselma.com/gfs-24. There will also be a Street Ball Challenge for youth 12-16 years old. The play will begin at noon and end at 1:30 p.m. and will be played on the basketball court next to the McRae Learning Center. The Selma Rising Mural Festival

The Selma Rising Mural Festival will be Saturday, Oct. 19, from  9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Phoenix Park. Closing ceremony is at 6 p.m. Three guests artists from Columbus, Ohio and two regional artists will facilitate eight (moveable) murals with the community in Phoenix Park.​​ MACAS invites ALL of Selma to come paint on the murals. Volunteers welcome.  All ages, no skills needed.  Let’s make beauty together. All artists will mentor young people to create a youth art club. The art club will create the 9th mural at a later date. The nine murals will remain on display for one year all together in Phoenix Park creating a dynamic art installation. The nine murals will be relocated to their permanent placements one in each ward of Selma.  Thus its a city-wide connection and gifts to each and every of the city’s eight wards.

Haunted History Tours

Old Cahawba’s Haunted History Tours will be on Saturday, Oct. 19 and 26. On this rare nighttime 90-minute tour, you will be shuttled to this ghost town’s most haunted locations. HIstorical accounts of sightings and personal experiences will be shared by your hosts, setting the stage for Alabama Paranormal Research to demonstrate the art of ghost hunting. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance by calling the visitor center at 334-872-8058 or onsite in the gift shop. We accept all major credit cards.

New Bethel MB to celebrate 128th anniversary

New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Orrville will host its 128th anniversary and homecoming Sunday, Oct. 20 at 1:30 p.m. with guest speaker, pastor Charles Burns and sister Valerie Ellis.

Selma University Inauguration

The Selma University Inauguration of President Stanford E. Angion, ED.D., Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Selma University Jemison-Owens Gymnasium, 1501 Boynton Street.

Candlelight Vigil

The Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting and Open House of Foot Soldiers Park will be on Monday, Oct. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon at 1018 Water Avenue.

Sprinkle Me Pink Walk

Everyone is invited to the second annual Sprinkle Me Pink Breast Cancer Walk sponsored by Build CDC on Sunday, Oct. 27, from 2-4 p.m. at Bloch Park. Teams are encouraged to donate $100 to participate in the walk, and individuals are asked to donate $25 to help raise money to help a local organization which assists patients during their breast cancer journey. Hymnfest

Everyone is invited to an old-fashioned hymn sing along on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 3 p.m. at the historic St. Luke’s Church at Old Cahawba Archaeological. The free event is open to all who love singing favorite hymns together, such as Great is Thy Faithfulness, Amazing Grace, Give Me That Old Time Religion. Local church choirs will lead the singing, and everyone will receive a Hymnfest 24 hymnbook to join along. Come on out to the park 14 miles west of Selma and help us lift the rafters of the historic church harmonizing with friends and family the familiar age-old hymns of the church. Southern Alabama Veterans Ball

The 2024 Southern Alabama Veterans Ball is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. at the Kiwanis Center, 2096 Kiwanis Drive in Andalusia. Paid tickets are required.  A Veterans Holiday Fair will take place Friday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The event is open to the public.   • Al-Anon, a support group for families and friends of alcoholics, meets every Monday at noon in Common Ground at Gamble House, across from St. Paul’s Episcopal.
  • The Selma Outreach Team Fellowship Prayer Ministry will have a prayer meeting on the first Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. For more information, call (334) 412-6673.
  • Edmundite Missions holds Bible study every Monday from 10 – 11 a.m. in the classroom of the Bullock Community and Recreation Center. Call (334) 553-2736 for more information.
  • Free Zumba and meditation classes are held weekly at the Bullock Center on 1428 Broad Street. Zumba is Monday and Thursday and meditation is Tuesday and Wednesday. Both are held at 5:30 p.m.
  • The Selma and Dallas County Public Library offers Book Bunch every Thursday from 10-11 a.m. in the Kathryn Windham Conference Room. All are welcome.

  • Edmundite Missions is seeking volunteers to assist in operating the new Dr. Michael and Catherine Bullock Community and Recreation Center. Tutors, coaches, greeters, room monitors, active adult teachers, team organizers and administrative support volunteers are needed.   • The Dallas County School System is actively seeking to identify and enroll all students who are living in a homeless situation that reside within Dallas County School’s jurisdiction through the McKinney-Vento Assistance Act.   • The American Red Cross is looking for volunteers. Critical needs currently are for disaster action team volunteers and blood drive volunteers. There are over 100 volunteer needs including disaster action team member, shelter worker, health services volunteer, disaster action team auxiliary member, fleet and facilities operation positions, and blood donor ambassadors.   • Alabama State Bar volunteer lawyers program will have its Selma monthly civil legal advice clinic on the first Wednesday of each month from 1-3 p.m. at the Dr. Michael and Catherine Bullock Community and Recreational Center, 1428 Broad Street. Local lawyers will provide free legal advice to those who cannot afford legal assistance on topics including divorce, visitation, debt, tenant issues, probate matters and Bankruptcy.
