The Liberty Learning Foundation brought its Super Citizens Program to R.B. Hudson STEAM Academy last week.
The foundation brought their traveling program to Selma including a visit from the Statue of Liberty herself. She led the students wearing their Statue of Liberty crowns through a number of songs, including their signature song “You in the U.S.A.”
The also talked about the super citizen program. Through the 10-week course, they will help students learn about their government and civics. At the end of the program, the students will get a chance to honor their own super citizens in the community.
The event, which was attended by State Sen. Robert Stewart, D-Selma; County Commissioner Victoria Rogers and Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr.
“I just have one thing I want to say to you. We work really hard for you because we love you,” Perkins said.
Rogers encouraged the students to embrace their educational opportunities.
“I see doctors. I see lawyers. I see senators. I see Congressmen and Congresswomen,” Rogers said. “You are tomorrow’s leaders. You are very important to us because you are our future.”
Stewart said he was impressed by the enthusiasm of the students learning about government.
“Today, it is very important for you to learn how to be a good citizen,” Stewart said. “So do y’all promise to be a super good citizen?”
The students answered back, “Yes.”
