Ward 6 voting rally

 Soft opening

By the River Center for Humanity’s Café’ soft opening will be Saturday, Nov. 2. Lunch will be from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. with dinner from 4-7 p.m.

Annual Homecoming and Church Anniversary

Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Orrville will have its annual homecoming and church anniversary on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 11:30 a.m. The theme will be “Celebrating the Journey.” Special guests include the Rev. Willie Wright and New Hope Baptist Church of Selma. Sister Cassandra Clifton is secretary. The Rev. John L. Ward is pastor.

Hymnfest

Everyone is invited to an old-fashioned hymn sing along on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 3 p.m. at the historic St. Luke’s Church at Old Cahawba Archaeological. The free event is open to all who love singing favorite hymns together, such as Great is Thy Faithfulness, Amazing Grace, Give Me That Old Time Religion. Local church choirs will lead the singing, and everyone will receive a Hymnfest 24 hymnbook to join along. Come on out to the park 14 miles west of Selma and help us lift the rafters of the historic church harmonizing with friends and family the familiar age-old hymns of the church. Lunch at the Library

Selma-Dallas County Public Library will have Lunch at the Library with author Robert Bailey on Thursday, Nov. 7, at noon. For more information or to make a reservation call 334-874-1725. Tickets are $15.

Alabama River Chili Cook-Off

Veterans Day Parade

The Restoring Veterans Hope Organization will host a Veterans Day parade to honor all who served on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 10 a.m. It will be followed by Paint in the Park. Southern Alabama Veterans Ball

The 2024 Southern Alabama Veterans Ball is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. at the Kiwanis Center, 2096 Kiwanis Drive in Andalusia. 135th church anniversary

New Shiloh Baptist Church located at 5825 Cahaba Road in Orrville will have its 135th church anniversary and homecoming on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 1:30 p.m. Guest speakers include the Rev. Dr. Jay Coleman, pastor of Baptist HIll Missionary Baptist Church in Lowndesboro. The theme is “returning home to glorify God in the unity of the spirit.” The Rev. Henry L. Seltzer is pastor.

Gnome workshop

Big Buck Showdown

Scott Communications is teaming up with area businesses all over Central Alabama to deliver the Big Buck Showdown. Contest runs Oct. 15 through Feb. 10, 2025.

  • Al-Anon, a support group for families and friends of alcoholics, meets every Monday at noon in Common Ground at Gamble House, across from St. Paul’s Episcopal.
  • The Selma Outreach Team Fellowship Prayer Ministry will have a prayer meeting on the first Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. For more information, call (334) 412-6673. 
  • Edmundite Missions holds Bible study every Monday from 10 – 11 a.m. in the classroom of the Bullock Community and Recreation Center. Call (334) 553-2736 for more information.
  • Free Zumba and meditation classes are held weekly at the Bullock Center on 1428 Broad Street. Zumba is Monday and Thursday and meditation is Tuesday and Wednesday. Both are held at 5:30 p.m.
  • The Selma and Dallas County Public Library offers Book Bunch every Thursday from 10-11 a.m. in the Kathryn Windham Conference Room. All are welcome.
  • The AUM Foundation is seeking Selma women to serve as mentors for the 2024-2025 school year. Call (334) 407-9429 for more information.
  • Edmundite Missions is seeking volunteers to assist in operating the new Dr. Michael and Catherine Bullock Community and Recreation Center. Tutors, coaches, greeters, room monitors, active adult teachers, team organizers and administrative support volunteers are needed.   • The Dallas County School System is actively seeking to identify and enroll all students who are living in a homeless situation that reside within Dallas County School’s jurisdiction through the McKinney-Vento Assistance Act.   • The American Red Cross is looking for volunteers. Critical needs currently are for disaster action team volunteers and blood drive volunteers. There are over 100 volunteer needs including disaster action team member, shelter worker, health services volunteer, disaster action team auxiliary member, fleet and facilities operation positions, and blood donor ambassadors.   • Alabama State Bar volunteer lawyers program will have its Selma monthly civil legal advice clinic on the first Wednesday of each month from 1-3 p.m. at the Dr. Michael and Catherine Bullock Community and Recreational Center, 1428 Broad Street. Local lawyers will provide free legal advice to those who cannot afford legal assistance on topics including divorce, visitation, debt, tenant issues, probate matters and Bankruptcy.
