Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

An Editorial Opinion of The Selma Times-Journal

We’d like to congratulate Derick “Duke” Smith and Erick Smith of Southside High School for signing with Auburn University last week on Early National Signing Day.

This is a huge accomplishment for any football player. Both had received offers from Auburn and Alabama. While some may not be so happy about their choice to go to one in-state school over the other, there is no doubt that we are all happy to see them get the chance to play SEC football.

This is not only a great accomplishment for the Smith family, but it is also a great reflection on Dallas County and the Southside High School and its feeder schools. To get a chance to play SEC football, it takes not only great athleticism, but you also have to make the grade in the classroom.

These two are not only leaders at Southside, but these two are also an example of what you can do when you work hard. Their hard work has paid off.

Coach Charles Moody ended his speech at their signing day ceremony by saying, “Who’s next?”

We hope that many from our area will take that challenge and find a way to follow their example. It doesn’t have to be in the athletic area, but you can do it by excelling in whatever you do in life. With hard work, you can excel in your craft.

Good luck to Duke and Erick.
