On Monday, Jan. 6, The Valley Grande City Council met to discuss the city’s business, which involved an open discussion about putting signage just across from the Selma Funeral Home, located at 5171 Alabama 22 Highway.

Councilwoman Tammy Troha said she spoke with a state trooper about the area adjacent to the funeral home because it’s an area that is consumed quite often with trailers and can possibly pose a risk to those passing by.

Like Troha, Councilwoman Jane Harris proposed to the council if there could be additional signage put up in the area that warns those who stop there, not to dump or park in the area, even signage saying that those who park will be fined up to $1,000.

“The problem is, it’s not ours,” Mayor Wayne Labbe said. “It’s the state’s and if they would put something up like that, then I think the state troopers could start writing fines.”

Troha told the council that the area already has posted signs regarding the parking and said that the trooper she spoke to said citizens haven’t really been parking there because of the excessive number of potholes.

Regarding the city’s old business, Labbe said he is still in contact with the agent from South Land Company, LLC regarding the community center property listing that currently has a selling price of $89,900. Labbe said he would have to speak with the agent today to sort out the issue with the property keys and he said that the agent told him yesterday that he has someone interested once again in the property.

“And if that’s the case, then next council meeting, we may have an offer on the table,” Labbe said. “So you’ll be thinking about what we could accept as an offer and we’ll will talk about that if the offer comes in.”

Labbe told Selma Times Journal Reporter Faith Callens that if somebody bids $80,000 or $75,000, then the decision falls back into the council hands of whether they will accept the asking offer or not. Labbe said if the offer doesn’t go through, the property will continue to stay on the market.

During the meeting, the council also discussed the bid they currently have out for a new concession stand and the announcement booths but said the process of the two projects have been delayed due to their subcontractors not communicating back in time.

Labbe said the project process is currently on hold until the latter part of January.
