Dealers: Some drivers seek better fuel mileage

As gas prices continue to fluctuate, local residents aren’t taking any chances with their wallets and are instead, choosing to trade in their mid-size and full-size cars and SUVs for more fuel-efficient models.

Car dealerships such as Moore-Stewart Ford and Honda, Victor Automotive and Roger’s Auto Sales, have seen recent changes in how their customers are buying.

“In the past two-to-three weeks we’ve had about four-to-five SUV trade-ins,” said Mal Driggers, senior representative for Moore-Stewart Honda. “People trade in SUVs such as a Chevrolet Suburban or Tahoe for newer Hondas.”

Barry Parker, sales manager for Moore-Stewart Ford, said customers have abandoned gas-guzzlers for friendlier Ford Fusions, Focuses, Explorers and Edges. And for truck lovers, Parker said the new Ford F-series is equipped with EcoBoost, or an engine with the power of a V8 Engine but more fuel-efficient like a V6.

“We’ve seen a bigger push in trade-ins in the last 45 to 60 days,” Parker said.

And though some dealers are experiencing a surge in business, others are not so much. Representatives from Roger’s Auto Sales and Victor haven’t seen much activity in several months.

Chris Smith, general manager for Victor, said they’ve only seen 16 trade-ins overall, dramatically lower than last year’s numbers.

“We’ve seen some people come in to upgrade to bigger or nicer cars but not because of the gas prices,” Smith said. “Last year we saw trade-ins left and right, but not this year, and it’s strange to me.”
